 Sunday July 14th Hastings preview

Racing resumes at Hastings today with an excellent eight race card that will feature two stakes races as well as a batch of ‘Wiener Dog’ races which will be held in between most of our races today which will keep the crowd entertained throughout the day.

The first stake is in race two as five two year olds will go six furlongs in the $50,000 Spaghetti Mouse. The race is named in honor of the Nick and Pauline Felicella runner that took home numerous stake races including the 2005 BC Derby. He retired as the richest BC bred runner of alltime with earnings just under the $1 million mark.
The $50,000 Spaghetti Mouse is a true family affair as Phil Hall has three of the five starters and his niece Christine Ammann has the other two entrants. The rail went to Peter Redekop’s AT ATTENTION who had a rough debut and finished well back in a maiden race. He was well fancied at the mutuels that day and with a cleaner trip he may reward his followers today. Antonio Reyes will be at the controls for trainer Phil Hall.

Peter Redekop and Phil Hall team up again with ASTRONOMICAL who was a solid runner-up in his debut after battling on the lead throughout. He is in with a good chance. Amadeo Perez rides.

George Gilbert’s CATCHACOUGAR was a comfortable winner in her first start going three and half furlongs. She is the lone filly in the lineup and her speed could make her dangerous. Enrique Gonzalez gets the call again from a busy trainer Phil Hall.

The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ PORTER GENT was a good second in his first career start. The race was shorter but did chase home the eventual winner CATCHACOUGAR and looked good in the stretch. He will get Lasix for the first time and Scott Williams is up for trainer Christine Ammann.

DOUGIE DOUGIE – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO

The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds also own the  impressive debut winner DOUGIE DOUGIE who cruised to victory at this trip two weeks back. He is strictly the one to beat and Alex Marti returns to the saddle for Christine Ammann.

The co-feature is the $50,000 Lieutenant Governors for older horses at a mle and a sixteenth.

The inside post goes to the NATHC’s PITCH COUNT who checked in a good third in his Hastings debut. He battled on the lead before tiring a bit late. He should be even better today running in Vancouver for the second time after the long ship from the Southwestern U.S. Scott Williams gets the all from trainer Glen Todd.

BRAVE NATION – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO

Gordon Christoff’s BRAVE NATION just lost a narrow photo for third to PITCH COUNTand that was his first start since returning to Hastngs after a successful spring in Northern California. He is another that should improve second time out. Alex Marti is the new pilot for trainer John Snow.

NOT YET – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO
Lana Brindley, George Robbins and Rob and Vicky  Gilker’s NOT YET is tacklingthe big boys after a solid runner-up at this distance in his first race of the year. This is a tougher assignment but he is capable. Antonio Reyes will be in the tack.
HE’S THE REASON – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO

The NATHC’s HE’S THE REASON broke through with a win sprinting last time out. He was very  handy early and the clever strategy  got him the win. He gets tested for class this afternoon. He will need to continue to improve for jockey Richard Hamel who is back aboard for Glen Todd.

APALACHEE BAY – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO

Peter Redekop’s APALACHEE BAY flexed some muscle in the Longden last month and earned an easy two length win. He seems to be a better horse at this trip and he should be tough to beat today. Amadeo Perez will once again team up with trainer  Phil Hall.

HANSEN’S VICTORY – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO

The NATHC’s HANSEN’S VICTORY eked out a game win against high priced claimers last time out in an excellent time. His better races have come at this longer trip and with the lack of speed signed on he could prove tough catch. Denny Velazquez will be at the helm for trainer Glen Todd.

CALGARY CAPER – PATTI TUBBS PHOTO

Kim Peacock and Lance Giesbrecht’s CALGARY CAPER is true warrior that can  sprint, go long and even the marathon BC Premiers is in his wheelhouse. All he will need is a decent early tempo to aid his exciting off-the-pace style. He always gives his best. Enrique Gonzalez will be aboard for trainer Phil Hall. a

There is a tweak to the schedule next week as we will race Friday, July 19th at 7:00 p.m. and then an afternoon program on Saturday, July 20th. The Saturday card will feature the popular Deigton Cup which always brings well dressed individuals that love to bet the races. There will be NO LIVE RACING on Sunday, July 21st.

Good luck everyone !!
